I've kinda the same problem.

I upgraded this Ubuntu 11.10 from 11.04. When I choose Power off from
the menu it seems like it is shutting down but it ends up with a black
screen and then I need to hold down the power off button.

My machine is a Thinkpad T61p 6460.

Title:
Machine does not shutdown completely after installation

Status in “ubiquity” package in Ubuntu:
  Confirmed

Bug description:
After a fresh install of 11.10 Beta 1 on Thinkpad T61, attempting to
restart shows the "Please remove installation media and close the tray
(if any) then press ENTER:"... CD ejects, but pressing enter does not
shutdown/restart. (It does when doing an 11.04 installation on the
  same machine.)
