Thank you for taking the time to report this bug and helping to make
Ubuntu better. The version of update-initramfs that you likely have
installed is unable to work on a persistent usb stick. You can resolve
this issue by upgrading the version of casper on your system. This can
be done via the commands:

sudo apt-get update; sudo apt-get install casper

Then performing the software update or installation that you were
originally trying. If this does not resolve your bug please set its
status back to New. Thanks in advance!

** Changed in: initramfs-tools (Ubuntu)
       Status: New => Invalid

Title:
  package initramfs-tools 0.92bubuntu78 failed to install/upgrade:
  subprocess installed post-installation script returned error exit
  status 143

Status in “initramfs-tools” package in Ubuntu:
  Invalid

Bug description:
  What I did:
  Used "Startup Disk Creator" (usb-creator) and Xubuntu 10.04.2 iso to create "Live USB" with 4GB Casper-rw persistence file. (confirmed iso is good. confirmed USB drive is good.)
  Booted to Live USB (crazy slow, but that's beside the point)
  Updated Package DB
  Upgraded all updated packages.

  What I expected:
  Update/upgrade finishes without errors.

  What happened (the error):
  When updating initramfs, LZMA process blows up to several hundred MB and just runs and runs. I had to kill the process to regain control of my system.

  What else I did:
  Tried running update-initramfs independent of update/upgrade process and get the same result.

  What happened then:
  Output of undate-initramfs shows "Building cpio /cdrom/initrd.img-2.6.32-33-generic.new initramfs" when LZMA process goes bananas.
