This is obviously not a dupe of bug 291342, unduping.

** This bug is no longer a duplicate of bug 291342
free disk space check could actually carry out suggested ways to clear space

Title:
update-manager should offer more suggestions out of situations where
  HD space is tight

Status in “update-manager” package in Ubuntu:
  Confirmed

Bug description:
  Binary package hint: update-manager

Upon dist-upgrades a lot of HD space is needed in /var which is not
always available. During day-to-day operations it's usually not
necessary to have one or even several GB free in /var. When update-
manager fails it could offer more helpful suggestions such as those
  from bug 152580 comment 8.

I've had a look around the code, but there seem to be several places
where the program checks free space. My apologies I can't immediately
  provide a patch.

  Next steps:
  1) verify that Dir::Cache::archives (the preferred temporary solution IMHO) actually works
  2) find the places in the code where this would present a remedy
  3) prepare and attach patch here
