This is fixed in the ltsp-live rewrite in Oneiric. Unfortunately no
backport will be available for 10.04, but since it's usually only run
from live media it shouldn't be an issue.

LTSP Live on Edubutu 10.04 DVD doesn't work reliably

Status in “ltsp” package in Ubuntu:

Bug description:
The new LTSP Live package used from a real Edubuntu 10.04 DVD in the live mode doesn't work most of the time and I am unable to reproduce conditions when it does. I used three different servers and two different thin clients and networks which all work perfectly with LTSP 4.2 and with LTSP 5 on installed Kubuntu and Edubuntu 8.04 systems. The LTSP Live GUI does work fine and also warns if a network card is already connected to a router or something, and installs LTSP live with apparent success.
However the thin clients almost never boot, not receiving any IPs. If the thin client is kept running and the LTSP Live GUI used several times on both eth0 and eth1, the IP information eventually gets to the thin client which offers to boot Edubuntu. However it then mostly doesn' boott, giving an ARP timeout. Sometimes it goes a bit further and a splash screen is seen, but it doesn't go further. Very occasionally the thin client does boot right through and can be used (and works perfectly), but it is so seldom and after so much fiddling that I'm unable to say exactly what is needed. I use both a crossover ethernet cable and a switch in a router with its DHCP disabled, servers with one and with two NICs, and a real thin client (Thinner Formula) and a HP Laptop set up to boot from LAN. The behaviour seems to be the same with all configurations of hardware.
