I have the same bug, just tried to update to 11.10 and the same message popped up
its in the "Setting new software channels" - Calculating the changes
When you click close on this error message, it proceeds to the next message which is the one that shows you
how many packages will be removed, updated and etc.. 
do you want me to upload the /var/log/dist-upgrade/ logs too???

  I'm using Ubuntu Natty Narval 11.04 and I was upgrading to Ubuntu
  11.10, but the program shown an error that says: "It was impossible to
  install a required package. Please report this as a bug using 'ubuntu-
  bug update-manager' in a terminal."
