The error message in the logs is:

dpkg: error processing plymouth-theme-ubuntu-text (--configure):
 subprocess installed post-installation script returned error exit status 2

 This is not a bug in the Ubuntu plymouth package. It is likely a bug in
the Ubuntu Satanic Edition that you installed from, which is not an
official flavor of Ubuntu. You probably need to remove whatever is
currently at /etc/alternatives/text.plymouth and run dpkg --configure
-a.

  This happened in VirtualBox upon a fresh install of Ubuntu Natty
  Satanic Edition, an immediate package upgrade, reboot and then a dist
  upgrade to Oneiric.
