I recreated this using an 11.10 Live CD and booting with textonly and
only-ubiquity.

Title:
textonly parameter has no effect when booting from usb-stick

Status in “casper” package in Ubuntu:
  Triaged

Bug description:
  Binary package hint: casper

I'm trying to boot from a usb flash drive without starting X. The
  manpage
  (http://manpages.ubuntu.com/manpages/karmic/en/man7/casper.7.html)
says that there is a parameter called 'textonly' - but when I add this
parameter to the standard boot options list proposed when using the
"Try Ubuntu without any change to your computer" -> F6 (other options)
-> ESC, it boots into the graphical mode.

The original boot options list (hopefully without typos):
  noprompt cdrom-detect/try-usb=true persisent file=/cdrom/preseed/ubuntu.seed boot=casper initrd=/casper/initrd.lz quiet splash --
  My edited list:
  noprompt cdrom-detect/try-usb=true persisent file=/cdrom/preseed/ubuntu.seed boot=casper initrd=/casper/initrd.lz quiet splash -- textonly

On the other hand, if I use the paramater `text` instead of
`textonly`, which doesn't seem to be documented anywhere, it seems to
work. So is this just an error in the documentation (textonly = text)
or does `text` something completely different I'm not aware of and
  `textonly` is defect?
