I was also affected by this bug. I tried to remove some HOME config/hidden files and it works again. In my case I came from a Natty version upgrade, so maybe some files where buggy for Software Center.
The files/dirs I moved from my home folder are:
 - .cache/
 - .compiz-1
 - .gconf/
 - .gconfd/
 - gnome2/
 - .gnome2_private/
 - .gksu.lock

I haven't done yet further analysis to know wich is the guilty one, but
it works again.
