Thank you for reporting this bug to Ubuntu. Karmic reached EOL, and
later releases already use apt-add-repository, so I am marking this
Won't Fix, as backporting to an EOL release will not happen.
Please feel free to report any other bugs you may find.

Title:
apt-add-repository command named incorrectly
Status in “software-properties” package in Ubuntu:
Won't Fix
Bug description:
From lucid onwards the apt-add-repository command is used to add a repository to the sources.list
Unfortunately in karmic this command was originally named add-apt-repository.
This produces some confusion especially in new users, as the existing
documentation assumes the new command name also exists in karmic.
For example:
https://wiki.ubuntu.com/UbuntuOne/FAQ#How%20do%20I%20use%20the%20Ubuntu%20One%20beta%20PPA%20on%20Ubuntu%209.10%20and%20higher?
As Karmic was the first release which contained this tool, changing
the name retrospectively will allow continued documentation to refer
to the tool as noted in the ubuntu one docs above.
Although I'm not a skilled programmer, I suspect backporting the lucid
version of this package to karmic may solve this issue quickly and
simply.
