when you say the keys are not handled, do you mean that they don't have
any effect on the volume, or is this referring just to the lack of on-
screen notification? The latter is bug #357673. The former would be a
kernel or udev bug - acpi-support is not involved in handling these
hotkeys.

Title:
Thinkpad X60 volume up/down/mute not handled on Ubuntu 11.10

Status in “linux” package in Ubuntu:
  Incomplete

Bug description:
My Ubuntu 11.10 does not handle volume up/down/mute special keys on
Thinkpad X60, brightness up/down works fine.

It did not work on Ubuntu 11.04 either (sorry for the slow report),
never tried it on earlier Ubuntu releases.

acpi_listen reports the buttons so i think they just need to be mapped
  somewhere (up, down, mute):

  ibm/hotkey HKEY 00000080 00001015
  ibm/hotkey HKEY 00000080 00001016
  ibm/hotkey HKEY 00000080 00001017
