Title:
Natty causes interruption of CMOS Post checks

Status in “grub2” package in Ubuntu:
  Invalid
Status in “linux” package in Ubuntu:
  Expired

Bug description:
  Problem
  ------------------------------
I'm not entirely sure but Natty seems to leave the PC in a state that POST and Windows do not like.

  1. I log into Natty and everything is fine.
  2. I shutdown my PC.
  3. I turn on my PC.
  4. The PC is doing some POST checks and gets as far as stating “C1E CPU Comptaible”, or something along them lines (just before it lists my discs and dvd drives), and the PC reboots. It then performs POST again and states the previous boot failed or the CMOS POST checks were interrupted.

To solve the above I go into my BIOS settings and loads defaults then
  reset everything.

  Alternatively it screws up Windows.
  1. I log into Natty and everything is fine.
  2. I restart my PC.
  3. In grub I select Windows.
  4. Windows boots fine. About 10-15 seconds after getting to a screen (so the login screen) it reboots the computer without warning (not even a BSOD). After that everything works properly (select windows login and everything is normal).

I have had the issue since Alpha 2. I thought it might have been
related to the Nvidia xorg issue but that has been resolved, so then I
waited for Beta and it's still not resolved. I have been meaning to
report this for a while but not got around to it.

  Diagnosis
  ------------------------------
I was concerned the issue may be caused by bad hardware, however I believe I have ruled out that possibility. For starters Windows does not cause the issue and in fact seems to reverse the issue. Additionally there have been no other problems and Natty itself runs fine. To be doubly safe I tried using the 10.10 and 11.04 live cds to see what happens. 10.10 works are you would expect.

  1. I put the disc in
  2. Start the PC
  3. Login to live cd
  4. Shutdown
  5. Start PC
  6. PC boots as normal.

I try the 11.04 live CD (Beta 1) and the issue occurs again.

  1. I put the disc in
  2. Start the PC
  3. Login to live cd
  4. Shutdown
  5. Start PC
  6. POST interrupted error.

I did some further digging and when using the rebooting to Windows
scenario I found some errors in the windows system event log. I have
attached a screenshot of the error and below is the details output in
  XML.

  System
  ------------------------------
  Dual OS
OS: Kubuntu Natty (Beta 2) x64 (installed with Live CD)
  OS: Windows 7 x64

  Mboard: Asus P5N-D
  Memory: 4GB (Corsair or Crucial)

Let me know if there are any more details you need. Considering I have
had this issue for a while now and PC is still running I don't think
it is hurting the hardware but it is still a concern.

  Adam
