I have this problem in Ubuntu 11.10 and I have had it since Ubuntu 10.04 at least. dmesg tells me nothing when ejecting and nothing when I put in another disc. It just shows the old contents until I do a software eject (i.e. by clicking the eject button in nautilus).

I think this bug affects this package , but change the package
affected by this bug if needed.

  1) insert a cdrom or dvdrom containing audio data, video data or whatever.
  2) wait until cd is automatically mounted.
3)eject the cdrom by using hardware button
  4) the cd is ejected, but it is not unmounted on my desktop and i have to unmount it manually.

Please ask if you need more information.
