Using the boot cd, can you add to this bug the output of:
  sudo lspci -vv

Also, if you can use the boot cd to get to the hard drive of the broken installation it's possible that /var/log/Xorg.0.log from the
hard drive (not the running CD) and /var/log/syslog and /var/log/kern.log may have something to say.

Title:
Ubuntu 11.10 does not start after instlallation [at Stopping userspace
  bootsplash]

Status in “ubiquity” package in Ubuntu:
  New

Bug description:
I was using Ubuntu 10 then 11.04. Recently I tried updating it to
11.10 after testing it from a CD. It's in fact working fine from the
CD and I am posting this report using Ubuntu 11.10 on a CD. However,
when I installed it on my PC, it does not start. The screen displays
lot of test, then it stopped. I don't know what's wrong but I tried
several times and the results are the same.

  I am using a Compaq Q60.
