Walter, I had quite a few files in that directory:
/var/log/dist-upgrade/
├── [ 4096] 20111014-2022
│   ├── [ 39094] apt.log
│   ├── [ 1321224] apt-term.log
│   ├── [ 79425] history.log
│   ├── [ 49085] main.log
│   ├── [ 503268] term.log
│   └── [ 847] xorg_fixup.log
├── [ 4096] 20111014-2026
│   ├── [ 53916] apt.log
│   ├── [ 9575] main.log
│   └── [ 0] term.log
├── [ 507933] apt-clone_system_state.tar.gz
├── [ 53879] apt.log
├── [ 2660] lspci.txt
├── [ 9748] main.log
└── [ 0] term.log

I actually ran the install a second time shortly after. It seems that
the logging for my second attempt (which still showed the same issue) is
in the 20111014-2026 folder, so I have attached those two non-zero size
files

Title:
Upgrade to 11.10 says I cannot proceed

Status in “update-manager” package in Ubuntu:
  Incomplete

Bug description:
  I am told:
  ---------
An unresolvable problem occurred while calculating the upgrade:
E:Error, pkgProblemResolver::Resolve generated breaks, this may be caused by held packages.

   This can be caused by:
   * Upgrading to a pre-release version of Ubuntu
   * Running the current pre-release version of Ubuntu
   * Unofficial software packages not provided by Ubuntu
  ---------
I happened to successfully upgrade to 11.04 release a few days ago, does this mean I have inadvertently put myself in scenario 1 or 2 ? And sure I probably have some other non Ubuntu-provided software.

Is a more detailed error report available somewhere, then I could try
  to eliminate the cause?
