I can confirm that was a problem. I installed computer-janitor and run
it to find the old kernel versions to uninstall.
Then I ran dpkg -P <kernel> for two oldest kernels.
Initram for latest kernel (3.0) was then generated by dpkg scripts but when I rebooted the system hanged in kernel boot process.
I selected recovery version of kernel and this way I was able to see
kernel output which said something about missing root system disk which
was named after disk's UUID (what a stupidity) which says me nothing as
I am just a human not a robot. In older distributions I can remember
disks being named as sda, sdb not UUID=e95cd1c2-0bc3-4aad-a1ec-
b435ffc1dc63
I tried to recover using some older kernels but they whether hanged with
the same output or during boot process while latest message was about
mounting my NFS shares. With other kernel versions available in grub I
wasn't able to start X as I had 3rd party nvidia module installed which
wasn't compatible with older kernel versions. Trying to start X
disabling the module in Xorg.conf (I don't think common user will do
this to make X to start up) config the system hanged absolutely with
black screen.
At last I was somehow able to boot with one of the older kernels which
brought me to X but I decided to reinstall whole system as I am no more
having confidence in this corrupted one and will think over whether I'll
upgrade next time there is new Ubuntu release.
I know I could play around a while with grub, initrams etc..but trust me
I'm sick of spending my free time with all this. I just want to use
desktop distro as an end-user and I expect it to just work.
It is sad that simple (k)ubuntu upgrade doesn't check the disk space in
/boot while installing new kernel image and thus is able to broke while
system - seen from end user's point of view.
Thank you
