cpp was never installed an an slave alternative of gcc within a package.
did you change that yourself?

Setting up cpp (4:4.6.1-2ubuntu5) ...
update-alternatives: error: alternative cpp can't be master: it is a slave of gcc
dpkg: error processing cpp (--configure):
 subprocess installed post-installation script returned error exit status 2
