This is probably a duplicate of bug 854837.

I've generally found that 'startx' brings up the standard LXDE desktop,
whereas 'sudo service lxdm start' brings up the Lubuntu default DE.

  The LiveCD appeared to operate normally but, after some time, reverted
  to a command line prompt. Entering "startx" produced a normal desktop.
