Based off the information you've provided this sounds like an Xorg bug.
I'd recommend checking your /var/log/Xorg.log files and your
/var/log/syslog file to get some more information about the error.  I'm
reassigning this bug to xorg.

  Every now and again my desktop session just stops it goes to a black
  screen for a second then the gdm greater pops up and I have to re-log
  in all of what I was going lost.
