Updatemanager stopped working after this bug was reported and only
loaded until 50% of the progress bar. The same to Synaptic.

I think it was: The error from BZR popped up and I tried to copy the
error message from updatemanager. Updatemanager quit instead. The apt
dpkg database was destroyed.

At this point I decided to reinstall the system, which I have done
today.

  When running update-manager or during an update from the command line
  bzr is firing an error:

  bzr: ERROR: Working tree is out of date, please run 'bzr update'.
  E: Problem executing scripts DPkg::Post-Invoke 'if [ -x /usr/bin/etckeeper ]; then etckeeper post-install; fi'
  E: Sub-process returned an error code
