I removed all packages originating from anywhere but primary natty
sources, update-manager again and then the upgrade went through. The
resulting system was unable to display a loginscreen (fixed by
installing a login manager), VMWare Player broke (fixed by installing
newest version), eog segfaults on startup and gnome-shell doesn't work
(apparently due to me running the official nvidia driver). But all in
all I have a useable system.

Title:
Tried to upgrade from a fully up-to-date 11.04 to 11.10 using update-
manager. Get 'Could not calculate the upgrade' error.

Status in “update-manager” package in Ubuntu:
  New

Bug description:
Do note: I _do_ have unofficial packages installed, but so does
everybody. If that is a problem for update-manager then it should
offer to uninstall them like earlier versions did so successfully.

  Full error message:

  Could not calculate the upgrade

An unresolvable problem occurred while calculating the upgrade:
E:Error, pkgProblemResolver::Resolve generated breaks, this may be caused by held packages.

   This can be caused by:
   * Upgrading to a pre-release version of Ubuntu
   * Running the current pre-release version of Ubuntu
   * Unofficial software packages not provided by Ubuntu

If none of this applies, then please report this bug using the command
  'ubuntu-bug update-manager' in a terminal.
