I found one PPA that has the same version as in precise, rebuilt:

https://launchpad.net/~yofel/+archive/backports

and vim-gtk from there has a working global menu.

  Whenever I launch gvim from a terminal in Unity, I get this message
  after a few seconds

  '/com/canonical/menu/5400003': Timeout was reached

  The gvim window has a regular menu bar and doesn't use Unity's global
  menu.
