Is this the exact error message? I think there may be some words
missing here; that's ok if you don't have the exact message, I have a
pretty good idea of what the right message is anyway.
Our bug bot has marked this as a bug against the plymouth package. The
message is related to plymouth, but we have not in general heard reports
of this problem with Ubuntu 11.10. We *have* heard of such things on
Lubuntu in particular. So there seems to be something wrong in the
Lubuntu startup sequence that causes plymouth to be killed earlier than
it should be.

Title:
'Could not write bytes broken pipe' occurs just before log in with
Lubuntu 11.10
Status in “plymouth” package in Ubuntu:
New
Bug description:
Just did the latest round of updates on 24-11-11, including a kernel
update, and got this message just before log in 'Could not write bytes
broken pipe'.
I did a clonezilla restore of Lubuntu 11.10 and then did all of the
updates again and the same problem occured. After being away from the
computer for half an hour I started it up again and the error message
seems to have gone for now. System seems stable but this error message
was worrying as it happened half a dozen times on boot.
