I'm installing regular desktop Ubuntu, not server, x64 from USB as I've
hit a CD media bug with this system a while ago (updated existing bug
and not fixed). My motherboard does support EFI. For me to be able to
boot from the USB media in my BIOS's boot menu I can't do a "USB" boot,
I must do an "EFI" or it might be "UEFI" boot. Doing a "USB" I get a
loop of "Could not find kernel image vesamenu.c32" over and over. I
haven't filed that one or added to an existing bug as I didn't find one
the first time I looked and I'm dealing with other more important issues
on the system where I can't see the whole screen (left & top missing).

Title:
fresh install of ubuntu-server fails to boot
Status in “grub2” package in Ubuntu:
Confirmed
Bug description:
A fresh install of Ubuntu Server 11.10 x64 fails to boot on several
IBM x3650M3. The grub error message is "error: invalid arch
independent ELF magic". I've tried numerous tips (booting a live-cd
and reinstalling grub, mucking around with efi...) on the net
regarding this error, but to no avail. Ubuntu 11.04 does install and
boot on the machines.
