This bug affects me too. The install cd for 11.10 server needs some
remediation of the grub installer. If it were up to me I would pull the
image off the release page or at least have a strong disclaimer. I
think it has something to do with the newfangled EFI, whatever that is.
I noticed an option to create an efi partition manually in the
partitioner but doing so doesn't seem to help. It would be nice if the
installer offered a choice to use a bootloader that works on my hardware
(Intel mobo/bios & cpu circa 2009)

Title:
fresh install of ubuntu-server fails to boot
Status in “grub2” package in Ubuntu:
Confirmed
Bug description:
A fresh install of Ubuntu Server 11.10 x64 fails to boot on several
IBM x3650M3. The grub error message is "error: invalid arch
independent ELF magic". I've tried numerous tips (booting a live-cd
and reinstalling grub, mucking around with efi...) on the net
regarding this error, but to no avail. Ubuntu 11.04 does install and
boot on the machines.
