I'm experiencing this bug in 11.10 with an ATI Mobility Radeon HD 3650.
It happens regardless of the number of monitors I have connected (0-1).
It's mildly annoying in that it hinders my ability to debug the shutdown
process. I had a script that was blocking shutdown. Normally I would
be able to read the script name live on the screen while it's being
blocked, however with this bug I had to wait to reboot and check the

Overlapping text messages in boot screen
Status in “plymouth” package in Ubuntu:
During the boot-up process of Ubuntu 10.04, an error message appears
on the boot screen (just below the "ubuntu" logo and below the
blinking white/red dots). However, another message with
instructions on how to proceed appears exactly on top of the error
message, making it nearly impossible to read the error message.
