I haven't seen it recently. I think it's safe to close as fixed.

Title:
  mangled error messages from update-manager

Status in “update-manager” package in Ubuntu:
  Fix Released

Bug description:
  Binary package hint: update-manager

On a daily dist-upgrade, update-manager popped an error dialog
  containing the following message:

ldconfig deferred processing now taking place

  Errors were encountered while processing:

   libx11-6:i386

   libx11-xcb1:i386

  etn plb1-:36(:..-uut3 .
  etn plb1-c1i8 21421bnu)..Poesn rgesfrlb-i .
  dofgdfre rcsignwtkn lc

These last lines are not part of the apt term.log, so it seems to be something wrong in update-manager itself.

(The actual upgrade failure is uninteresting, related to apt's not-
completely-correct handling of configure ordering for multiarch: same
  packages.)
