@Marc: If your system doesn't work after partial upgrade, you may switch to text console (Ctrl+Alt+F1), log in and run these commands (in order to complete the upgrade):
sudo dpkg --configure -a
sudo apt-get install -f
sudo apt-get dist-upgrade

Also, you may use the official Ubuntu 11.10 CD to upgrade your system
without breaking settings and custom software installed.
