any workarounds yet?

I'm on ubuntu 11.10 (32bit)

  Invalid

Bug description:
  seems to be a perennial problem with every upgrade to ubuntu.   
  Not sure if it is real bug or just a problem that survives grub installs repairs etc.
  Then reappears in next ubuntu upgrade.
