Ive got the same problem on SuSe 11.4 my system freezes and I cant
login or ftp in without a hard re-boot (switch off) and on all occasions
AVAHI-DAEMON is the last process running:

Nov 10 15:43:41 avahi-daemon[1659]: last message repeated 2 times
Nov 10 15:43:41 jscosysv avahi-daemon[1659]: Received response from host 192.168.1.220 with invalid source port 49559 on interface 'eth1.0'
Nov 10 15:44:58 avahi-daemon[1659]: last message repeated 4 times
Nov 10 16:22:47 jscosysv acpid: 1 client rule loaded
Nov 11 09:31:25 jscosysv kernel: imklog 5.6.5, log source = /proc/kmsg started. (After hard re-boot)

So I have disabled AVAHI hopefully this will cure the problem. John

Title:
Pidgin avahi/boujour plugin causes hard system freeze

Status in “avahi” package in Ubuntu:
  Confirmed

Bug description:
  Binary package hint: pidgin

  Ubuntu 8.10.1

I have reported a bug in
  https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/avahi/+bug/317938 thinking
that the system freeze was caused by either vmware or avahi.

But after my latest test, I've discovered that it was actually the
avahi/bonjour plugin in Pidgin that causes the system freeze.

I have described what happens in my bug report at the top of this
  post.

  To quickly summarize:

  1) Laptop boots up with Vmware net devices and avahi
  2) Network Manager connects to my local wireless network
  3) As soon as NM connects, avahi kicks in and wants to add my wireless device as an interesting mdns point
  4) BANG, total system freeze. Not even the Magic Keys work on the kernel.

I have discovered that by disabling the Bonjour plugin in Pidgin that
  this problem doesn't occur.
