Tim,
Tried again and the partial upgrade proceeded this time (updating a bunch of stuff and installing "python-zeitgeist") but then the same thing happened next time (not sure that it didn't just update because there were updates to be done, with nothing to do with resolving the partial or whatever).

Red icon remains (even after restart) and same partial upgrade nonsense
and same "ERROR:root:NvidiaDetection returned a error: __init__() got an
unexpected keyword argument 'datadir'"in /var/log/dist-upgrade/apt.log.
