Actually, I gave up using it and switched to dpkg on the command line.

Title:
gdebi error using right click install context menu
Status in “gdebi” package in Ubuntu:
Incomplete
Bug description:
Xubuntu 11.10
I installed gdebi and removed software center because I prefer the way it used to be.
But installing gdebi isn't configured properly.
If you right click on a .deb then select open with gdebi, the window for gdebi opens then gives the serious error warning.
If you use gksudo gdebi appname.deb it works fine.
Clearly it must be a permissions problem yet in every version of
ubuntu for the last three years gdebi would load properly and THEN
prompt you for your root password if you wanted to install or
reinstall. No "serious" error.
No idea how to fix it so it is yet another bug report for ocelot.
