The upgrade did complete but Samba was not functional. I restored
11.04. I will try again in a few weeks.

Title:
While doing an upgrade from 11.04 to 11.10 I received a message that
  samba_2%3a3.5.11~dfsg-1ubuntu2

Status in “update-manager” package in Ubuntu:
  Incomplete

Bug description:
  lsb_release -rd
  Description: Ubuntu 11.04
  Release: 11.04

I have little idea exactly which version. I clicked up grade to 11.10
in k package and some time later after much down loading the error
  message "Could not install /var/cache/apt/archives/samba_2%3a3.5.11
  ~dfsg-1ubuntu2.

The process continued on from there.
