Title:
Ubuntu Installer and Bluetooth Keyboards
Status in “ubiquity” package in Ubuntu:
New
Bug description:
1) Ubuntu 11.10 (OneiricOcelot)
2) Ubuntu 11.10 installer
The Problem
-----------------
I recently installed Ubuntu 11.10 and noticed that bluetooth services are shutdown while at the same time the Ubuntu installer is asking the user to press the "Enter" key on the keyboard.
Steps to reproduce
----------------------------
1) Download the Ubuntu 11.10 64-bit image from the Web site and burn it to a CD
2) Prepare you hardware. You may ONLY use a bluetooth keyboard and mouse. You may not use a wired keyboard.
3) Perform a clean installation. Once the installation is complete, there will be a dialog box saying something along the lines of "you need to restart . . .". Click the restart button.
At this point, the UI will shutdown and drop you out at a basic
console as the shutdown sequence is initiated. The installer will
simultaneously eject the CD and instructions are given to remove the
CD from the tray and press "Enter" to finish rebooting. However, at
this point Bluetooth services have already been shut down so using a
bluetooth keyboard is impossible. This can be verified by (1) noticing
that the bluetooth keyboard no longer functions, and (2) seeing the
report that Bluetooth services are stopped in the output further up
the screen.
Of course, the solution is a hard reset, and it's not particularly
dangerous at this point, but it should not be necessary.
What I expect to happen
-----------------------------
I expect the keyboard to still be functional if I am given instructions to use it! The install media should be ejected, the instructions presented before the shutdown sequence is initiated. Or, don't worry about asking the user to press "Enter" and just eject the media and restart without requiring user intervention. The world will eventually move away from optical media as the primary installation medium in time.
