  Ubuntu Linux crashed on install

Bug description:
  Ubuntu 11.10
  Installing on Compaq Presario V5000
  Install got to about a 3rd of the way through preparing computer and stalled for over 24 hours.
  I expected the system to continue to install, or at least show signs that it was making progress.
