Could you please try to run the following command in a terminal:
sudo rm /var/lib/apt/lists/id.archive.ubuntu.com_ubuntu_dists_oneiric_universe_i18n_Translation-en
sudo apt-get update
and see if the problem goes away? Thanks!

  Please report this bug against the 'update-manager' package and
  include the following error message:

  MergeList /var/lib/apt/lists/id.archive.ubuntu
  .com_ubuntu_dists_oneiric_universe_i18n_Translation-en, E:The package
  lists or status file could not be parsed or opened.'
