Problem: Opening a window before forking causes problems for GTK.
Solution: Fork first, create the window in the child and report back to the
parent process whether it worked. If successful the parent exits,
if unsuccessful the child exits and the parent continues in the
terminal. (Tim Starling)
I've built the newest upstream from sources, and I can confirm that the
fix works fine: gvim (*without* -f) has a working global menu.

Whenever I launch gvim from a terminal in Unity, I get this message
after a few seconds

'/com/canonical/menu/5400003': Timeout was reached
The gvim window has a regular menu bar and doesn't use Unity's global
menu.
