No partitions in /dev/sda but I have tryed with this HDD partitioned
with the same result since ubuntu 10.04...

Logs attached in the next comments...

The installer worked on older versions of ubuntu (9.04?) I think I'm
experiencing this problem since 10.04. gparted detects partitions as
  expected and works ok.

Following ubiquity sources found that ubiquity takes it's device list
from /var/lib/partman/devices but this dir is empty.
