I am reluctant to run the 11.04 install having got 10.04 working again.
It would be ok if the installer still offered the option to install
11.04 alongside, but now it only offers to replace 10.04. and it took me
two days to get it back.

I have tried checking the disk, the results are attached.

The reason I had so many partitions is because I was using the "install
alongside" option and with each attempt a new set of partitions were
created.  It is tidier now, but where the 6.1 GB free space (visible
with Disk Utility)came from, I have no idea.

Bug description:
  Binary package hint: ubiquity

  Trying to install 11.04 along side 10.04 after latest update of
  Network-Manager removed internet access capability.

  I downloaded 11.04 on a second computer using 10.04 Startup Disk
  Creater and prepared a USB stick to use on the damage machine.

  I tried using the USB to run 11.04 and all seemed to function
  correctly, so decided to install. Of the three options, I  chose
  "install Ubuntu alongside them" as I want to keep the Windows
  partition unchanged. I decided to restrict the old 10.04 to 35 GB
  leaving 40.2 GB for 11.04 and started the partitioning phase. This
  crashed.

  The 250 GB drive in a Dell Studio is shared with Windows about 50/50.
   
  The crashed machine offers no method to export the two log files asked for in the "Installer crashed" window. These are /var/log/syslog and /var/log/partman: 

  Neither the install window or the installer crashed window could be
  closed or quit.

  As the off-button top right offered only: suspend, hibernate and
  system settings, the power supply had to be used to terminate the
  session.

  Although System Settings > System Log Viewer offered a link to
  reporting an error, my internet connection was very poor, so could not
  connect to the crash data base. I will try further ways.

  It would be a good idea if the System Log Viewer was able to export
  files to an external drive.
