Title:
Upgrade from v10.10 to v11.04 leads always to grub console after
  reboot

Status in “update-manager” package in Ubuntu:
  Incomplete

Bug description:
I am currently using successfully Ubuntu v10.10 (and former versions) since 2-3 years.
Starting with v9.10 I could successfully upgrade from version to version (minor or major) through built-in Update Manager.
However when I want to upgrade now from v10.10 to v11.04 it always fails.
After download, install and reboot I always stuck at the grub command line prompt.
I could never reach GUI 11.04.
I have no extraordinary configration or hardware.
Users should NOT be forced to fiddle around with grub (and other) config files.
A major upgrade should always be possible by choosing the default actions during upgrade process.
I am not sure which package is responsible for failing a complete upgrade.
If you tell me EXACTLY which log files are necessary to investigate the problem I will try to send it to you.
I assume the problem is because Unity is now the default GUI and not Gnome and the upgrade procedure has problems to convert old Gnome settings to new Unity setup.
So why not introduce an option for the user during upgrade process where he is prompted if he wants to convert to Unity or keep old Gnome?
  Peter
