simi,

I don't see python being handled by update-alternatives at all, so
unless you used update-alternatives --install, it shouldn't be expected
to work that way.

I'll close this bug since, as you mention, it's probably more of an
issue with your particular configuration, that, due to its unusualness,
is best handled manually the way we have discussed.

Thanks for your help and testing, and feel free to reopen this bug or
file a new one if you ever feel like it's a bug in the way Ubuntu
handles things.

  I need to run Python 2.6.6 but any Ubuntu upgrades need Python 2.7,
  however using update-alternatives has been unsuccessful to work when I
  switch to Python 2.7.
