I have the same issue after upgrading to ubuntu 11.04 with an ati radeon
4330 laptop graphics card. Default fglrx driver.

Bug description:
  Binary package hint: xorg

  After upgrade to Ubuntu 11.04, the X would not start except in safe
  mode. Choosing the old kernel version (vmlinuz-2.6.35-28-generic)
  worked around the problem, and I got the full X with hardware
  acceleration.

  The first error in the failing Xorg log (attached) was
       (EE) fglrx(0): ACPI: DRM connection failed
