Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: software-center

Clicking on a browser-downloaded .deb (googletalk plugin) brings up the
software centre and after some warnings lets me click on "install".
yes, please. So up comes an authenticaiton dialogue. But while it has
the correct username there, and a box to put my password, it does not
let me enter my password: the box is greyed out.

That cannot be correct behaviour. If there's something wrong with
authenticating, then don't ask me to and let me know what's wrong.

finding the .deb in Downloads and launching the software center by hand
with sudo allows installation no problem.
