I don't see the error message on the terminal when starting gvim.
But gvim -f helps here.

But the disappearance of the global menu bar came with the last update of Unity in Natty.
before that it worked as expected.

ANything you need to track down the problem?

  Whenever I launch gvim from a terminal in Unity, I get this message
  after a few seconds

  The gvim window has a regular menu bar and doesn't use Unity's global
  menu.
