Bug description:
  Binary package hint: update-manager

  new to Ubuntu, this is a very recently installed OS on fujitsu siemens
  laptop. quite impressed with ubuntu but when I tried to upgrade
  .................................

  Running 7.0.4

  Tried Administration > Update Manager got failure.

  Reports ' E:Read error - read (5 input / output error) E: the package
  lists or status file could not be parsed opened

  Also will not read package lists using sudo apt-get update from
  command prompt interminal.

  Also Applications > Add/ Remove  fails
