What did work is not a "fix" to bug, but a work around. Apparently,
[libnss3-1d] attaches itself (through upgrades) to old packages. As
such, [sudo apt-get autoremove] does not remove these packages. I found
this out by installing the [libnss3-1d] deb file listed above. Then
opened [synaptic] which reported a broken [libnss3-1d] package. Clicking
to repair the broken package, It listed everything it was attached to.
This included Thunderbird and Network Manager, in addition to old lucid
packages. All these packages had to be removed and reinstalled, minus
the old lucid packages, and on reboot - the upgrade succeeded.
What the upgrade manager failed to do - find and delete old packages,
that may (and do) cause upgrade problems.
