What version of ubiquity was this? Was there a captive portal between
you and the Internet?

Title:
"Connected to internet" doesn't become green when I connect to a
  network

Status in “ubiquity” package in Ubuntu:
  Incomplete

Bug description:
On being shown the "Preparing to install Ubuntu" page in the
installer, I realised that I wasn't connected to the internet (red
circle), so I chose a network and authenticated. When network manager
showed me I was connected, the red circle didn't change to green and
therefore "Download updates while installing" remained insensitive
even though I had internet access now.

Pressing "Back" and then "Install Ubuntu" still didn't change the red
circle to green. Selecting "Quit" hung the installer and only doing
`killall ubiquity` in VT1 caused a restart of the session, this time
  with the circle green :)
