Ah here is the issue in syslog:

It looks to me as if the hard disk is on a raid controller and there is
only one drive available on it.  It seems you can boot without using
dmraid support by passing the kernel command line 'nodmraid'.

Status in “ubiquity” package in Ubuntu:
  Incomplete

Bug description:
  There are two hard disc in your computer. Hitachi 320 GB and 40 GB
  Maxtor. During installation, only the 320 GB hard disc is present. The
  40 GB can not be seen. Hitachi has pulled off the motherboard, and
  still can not install a 40 GB hard disc. The System is a Daily build
  (23.07.2011).
