Hi Jamie,
Well, thanks to you and everyone using ubuntu and working in order to maintain it's reputation as a great distro.
I updated the packages from shell and even though I've seen a notification(on the bar on the top of desktop) while trying to install some packages, I didn't get the same this time although, when I clicked on the poweroff button at the end there was a short message (reboot required) along with the restart option. I did reboot the system afterwards and tried to mount stuff and access various applications(users-admin ) to check if it's working.
Meanwhile, I've just been able to figure out that there is something
else that's gone wrong as I've just been able to check that the user
gopal didn't have admin group as it's supplementary group and on adding
the same, almost everything has started working again. I have been using
NOPASSWD option in sudoers for this user so everything was working great
while using the shell or if I run 'gksu command' but only the click
feature which I normally prefer for various GUI tools was not working.
Now, I'm trying to figure out as to how this entry got removed from the
group file while I check my backup achieves. I've been installing a lot
of different server related applications nagios3, opennms, zabbix,
snort, cacti/munin, openvas-server(the package installation fails for
this and I've filed a bug for the same) and a couple of other softwares
and therefore will have to check if there is some unofficial debian
package that I created or downloaded from somewhere could have caused
this.
Thank you.

Title:
Unable to authenticate Gnome applications after a recent update of
libdbus-1-3 dbus dbus-x11
Status in “dbus” package in Ubuntu:
Incomplete
Bug description:
I'm using Ubuntu Lucid 10.04 LTS x64 and there has been a recent update of the following packages:
libdbus-1-3 dbus dbus-x11 libpng12-0 libsndfile1
Right after this update, without rebooting, I tried to mount
partitions which didn't work. I'm using the correct passwords and
tried with another user account as well. I'm getting the following
error in logs when I try to mount any unmounted partitions from within
nautilus or the 'places tab':
Jul 27 13:25:29 user-mech polkitd(authority=local): Operator of unix-
session:/org/freedesktop/ConsoleKit/Session6 FAILED to authenticate to
gain authorization for action org.freedesktop.systemtoolsbackends.set
for system-bus-name::1.145 [users-admin] (owned by unix-user:gopal)
In order to collect more information on this, I checked for the
processes that come up when the "Authentication Window" opens and
found that the following daemons run:
/usr/lib/policykit-1-gnome/polkit-gnome-authentication-agent-1 under the local user(gopal)
and
/usr/lib/policykit-1/polkitd as root.
I killed both the processes and did the following in order to view debug information:
$gopal:/usr/lib/policykit-1-gnome/polkit-gnome-authentication-agent-1
$gopal:sudo /usr/lib/policykit-1/polkitd
I'm getting the following on the prompt where I've executed "/usr/lib/policykit-1-gnome/polkit-gnome-authentication-agent-1"
polkit-agent-helper-1: pam_authenticated failed: Authentication failure
and
on the prompt with "sudo /usr/lib/policykit-1/polkitd":

I'll shortly try to downgrade the packages in order to see if it fixes the issue and will report back.
