Update-manager needs help info when terminating on wrong repositories and generally deal better with incorrect sources.list data

Bug description:
Hi,
Basically I updated everything except for all of the new kernal
related packages as they appeared to break my Nvidia drivers. However
they all appeared to work except now it broken the updates:
Could not initialize the package information
A unresolvable problem occurred while initializing the package
information.
Please report this bug against the 'update-manager' package and
include the following error message:
'E:Malformed 3rd word in the Status line, E:Error occurred while
processing xserver-xorg-input-wacom (UsePackage2), E:Problem with
MergeList /var/lib/dpkg/status, E:The package lists or status file
could not be parsed or opened.'
