Christoph,
Thanks, initramfs-tools seems a likely culprit given the delta between
0.98.8ubuntu3 and 0.99ubuntu2. I'll have a look at this.

Title:
plymouth regression: text missing in initramfs (again)
Status in “plymouth” package in Ubuntu:

Status in “plymouth” source package in Oneiric:
Triaged
Bug description:
Text display in the initramfs within plymouth has regressed again in
oneiric as of my latest upgrade. I believe the regression happened
some time between July 14 (my last boot of 3.0.0-4-generic) and today.
There was a plymouth update in that window, so that seems a likely
culprit; possibly triggered by the act of rebuilding, since the
changelog for the plymouth update doesn't indicate any changes that
should have broken this.
I can't otherwise bisect the initramfses to see what might have
changed, because a separate issue in bootchart caused all the
initramfses on my system to be regenerated. (Bug report pending.)
